Car Detailing, Sound and Fury of Competitors in Auto Detailing

Many auto detailers say that the car washes with their quicken version of the complete auto detail; the Express Detail; has cheapened the auto detailing profession and is ruining the artistic value of today’s professional auto detailing experts. I tend to differ completely from this line of reasoning. Having been on both sides of the Industry for some 27-years, I take a more observational and rational view. Let’s discuss business and free market philosophy for a moment.

Saying that fixed site car washes have destroyed the meaning of the word ‘detailing’ may be true to some extent. Yet one must ask, “Did McDonalds destroy the definition of “breakfast” when it introduced the ‘Egg McMuffin’ in Santa Barbara, CA?” Comparing ‘express detailing’ with a complete detailing service is merely another apples and oranges issue. We as professional detailers realize that there is no comparison. Why does this make so many of us angry? Do we see it is as all those years of perfection being thrown out the window? We shouldn’t; do not look at it that way. Look at it as an incredible opportunity. Channel the frustration and anger into energy and perseverance.

The fixed site car washes with their quick wax, ‘express detail’ have popularized the phrase ‘detailing’ to an entirely new group of consumers who normally might not be interested in your services prior to this introduction. Let’s say that a Professional Detailer has 70% of its business in new and used Car Dealerships and other fleet customers who occasionally need detailing. Vehicles such as rent-a-cars, work vans, or sales cars for corporations and 30% in individual retail, the higher per car profit of all services offered. It is not good business sense for a Professional Detailer to simply ignore that much of their customer base, and therefore they must develop a strategy to help customers and clients understand the difference between the express service and full detail.

Some of the communication problems come into play when a customer is convinced that the $50.00-$60.00 (sometimes as low as $35.00) he or she paid for an express detail is the same service they will get when they pay a $100.00+ complete detailing service. Even when the higher price comes from a professional and reputable detailing establishment and not a 30 minute ‘express service’ from a car wash. Unfortunately unless otherwise educated, perception becomes reality. Think on this when looking for ways to set yourself apart from the competition.

Want to Become an Auto Detailer? Car Detailing Book Review for Mobile Auto Detailers

As a former franchisor of mobile auto detailing trailers and mobile car wash trucks throughout North America, I worked hard to turn my once small business and one-man operation into a business that would make the E-Myth author Michael Gerber quite proud. I created manuals to do the work, and a franchise-able concept.

At that time I read every book on auto detailing I could find. Including one, which I’d very much like to recommend in case you are considering starting such a business of your own someday – the name of the book I want to recommend to you, and one I have long enjoyed myself is:

“Auto Detailing for Show and Profit,” by David H. Jacobs, Jr., Motorbooks International Publishers and Wholesalers Inc., Osceola, WI, (1986), pp. 84, ISBN: 0-87938-216-3.

The book has chapters on the “detailing basics” and supplies needed, and even tools of the trade required. Learn how to clean engine areas, car interiors, exterior, and types of paint. Learn about the types of waxes, applying hand wax or using a buffer. Learn how to finish the job to perfection, and even painting inside the engine compartment. This book is perfect for the auto detailer just starting out or for a classic car buff, who likes to buy and sell, or just win at car shows.

Now then, most auto detailers learn from doing, or they shadow another expert auto detailing individual for many weeks to get the hang of it. Then, they may go off on their own, or work as a continued apprenticed. In my many years in the business, I’ve often watched new auto detailers destroy several customer’s cars over the course of 4 to 6 months, and ruin the paint.

It’s very important that those in the profession do the best they can, so they don’t give auto detailing a bad name. Sometimes that requires both street smart, and book reading. There are very few really good auto detailing instruction manuals out there, although there are a few on the Internet. This particular book is more than adequate, and it is one I would highly recommend to anybody who is serious about the car detailing industry.

Once you learn the tricks of the trade so to speak, what works, and won’t, then you can begin to get a feel for which types of products you like the best, and fit your particular style of detailing. And this book is a very good place to start. Please consider all this.

Car Detailer and Ancillary Markets – You Can Detail Anything

The other day, I went to a festival, and as I walked down the street to my car I noticed that someone had put a business card on all the motorcycles which had been parked. A few of those business cards had fallen onto the ground, and I picked one up. It said motorcycle detailing. That’s interesting isn’t it? You see, for many years I was in the auto detailing business, we also had detailed airplanes and boats. I can remember one of our franchisees had a truck detailing company as a side business. The reality is you can detail just about anything, therefore if you are in the auto detailing business, you shouldn’t limit yourself. Let’s talk.

For the car detailer there are many ancillary markets. For instance, once you start detailing boats, you might get into fiberglass repair, teak reconditioning, or even hibernation services at the Marina. If you detail aircraft, you might be asked to maintain the janitorial services for the hangar, clean the ground equipment, or even rejuvenate deice boots. If you’re in the motorcycle detailing business like that company was, you might also be asked to clean trucks, and flatbed trailers which take the motorcycles to various shows.

Yes, some people like to specialize and I don’t hardly blame them, but you must remember that the customer is always right. If someone takes their Ferrari to the airport to get in their airplane, and they ask you to detail it while they are out flying around, you want to take a clue from your customer, and do what’s asked.

If they later asked you to come out the Marina to clean their yacht, you should say; yes. In fact, when the individual in the slip next door asks if you can clean their boat, their SUV, and then come to their house to detail the rest of their cars you should do that too. Don’t be surprised if they have a nice Harley in the garage. Are you beginning to see my point?

It is amazing what you will be asked to detail once you start, you might go to someone’s house lives on a golf course, and you will be detailing their golf cart before you know it. After all, they’re not going to wash it themselves or wax it, but they know it needs to get done, and you’re there with the equipment, the tools, knowledge, and the right products. Why not? Indeed I hope you will please consider all this if you are marketing a detailing company.

Auto Detailing Scratch Repair – Should Car Detailers Offer the Service?

One thing I always told my auto detailing franchisees was that they needed to give the customer what they wanted, and if they found that customers wanted a service that they were not yet providing, then they needed to get their crews trained and start offering those add-on services. Let’s talk about this shall we – I’d like to discuss paint and dent repair, and scratch repair services on auto paint because it’s not as difficult as it appears, even if in the future, those services may not entirely be needed anymore.

There was an interesting article in GizMag on April 15, 2014 titled; “Self-healing polymer restores itself in minutes,” by Dario Borghino. The article stated the German researchers have a new coating material, a ‘self-repairing sealant which is a scratch-resistant paint’ and although this technology is still in its infancy and probably will not hit the market for 4-5 years, a car manufacturer might expedite it to market, as that would be a great selling feature, a car that never gets scratches from shopping carts, keys, etc., just think about how revolutionary that would be for a moment.

The article is quoted as saying; “Self-healing polymers are extremely attractive materials, but creating the “ideal” polymer is far from easy, and compromises are in order. So far, scientists have mainly approached the problem from two angles: they’ve either used a network of embedded microcapsules containing a healing agent (which can only heal the material a limited number of times), or materials that can heal indefinitely because they are bound together by reversible chemical reactions (but need a large amount of energy as a catalyst).”

Today, in the auto detailing profession there are a number of franchises, distributorships and Biz Ops offering paintless dent removal, and scratch repairs. It’s become such a great business model and so respected by the auto dealers, customers and industry that someone with the right set-up could do just that and not even ever actually wax or polish a car. Yes, generally speaking the services do fall in the same category, but today there is enough business for either as a stand-alone small mobile business.

Okay so, in the future that might not be the case at all. Self-cleaning surfaces may keep the cars clean longer and with a perpetual shine, meanwhile, if for some reasons something scratches the car, the cars surface coating will remove the scratch at the molecular level, and you’ll never be able to tell it was ever touched. Please consider all this and think on it.

Choosing The Best Car Detailing Products

If you are looking for car detailing products you are obviously already interested in making your car look the best it possibly can. To achieve this look you will need the right products.

So what counts as the right products? Well that can come down to a few factors. The first and most important to consider is reliability and effectiveness of the products. Does the car polish polish your car well? Does the chrome cleaner make your chrome sparkle and the bug remover remove bugs? A good way to find out if the products do what you want them to is to get a sample and see for yourself. If you can’t get a sample then ask around in forums and from local car valeters to see what they recommend. You will find that some local valeters are tied in to using a certain brand so they may only recommend that one to you and it may not turn out to be the best one for you so be aware of that when asking them.

The next factor is availability. You will need to be able to get hold of the products easily whether from a store or online. The major players in the industry have lots of outlets so their products are easy to get hold of, but again, they may not be the best products for you. Smaller companies may have less outlets but still have easily accessible products.

Price is also a consideration. More expensive items aren’t necessarily better. Often you can get the price of products down if you buy in bulk such as taking up three-for-two offers. You may also find items cheaper online, but look out for delivery charges too when weighing up internet prices.

The car detailing products market is dominated by a few big name brands that have been around for many years. Whilst it is worth considering these it is also worth considering products from less well-known, newer companies. They don’t have the massive advertising and marketing budgets of the big boys so their name isn’t everywhere but their products can be just as good, if not better.

To find these smaller players, look online and see what comes up. If you find a company you haven’t heard of before, see what products they do and if they look of interest to you, dig a little deeper to find customer testimonials and reviews or request a sample. You may even find that they are demonstrating somewhere near you so it may be possible to go and see the products in action by the professionals.

Whatever car detailing products you choose, make sure they are the best for you and don’t just go for the first ones you come across.

Finding the right products is important and you will be rewarded for your research time with products that give you the showroom-quality look you are looking for.
